The Committee for Human Rights

February 2002

This Ashkelon-based organization works to defend justice, social harmony, and human dignity and rights, including those of the new immigrants.

The new immigrants are the most vulnerable segment of population, since they do not speak the language and are not familiar with the laws and the prevalent mentality of the population. As a result, they see themselves as strangers who are not fit to live in Israel.

The committee handles complaints about judicial, criminal and social discrimination against the newcomers. It offers legal assistance and keeps a close record of acts of discrimination by the authorities, such as police brutality, evidence planting, and legal abuse, especially in Ashdod and Ashkelon, cities with large immigrant population.

The committee wishes to thank the Cherney Foundation for its contribution to protecting democracy and human rights.
