On October 3, 2001, a Ukrainian rocket brought down the airplane flying from Tel Aviv to Novosibirsk with 78 passengers aboard. Last Thursday, on the first anniversary of the tragedy, ground was broken in the Ben Shemen Forest for a monument to commemorate the tragedy.

The groundbreaking ceremony was organized by Keren Keyemet Israel Land Fund.

One of the main sponsors for the monument is Michael Cherney Foundation, which has been helping the families of the deceased from the very first day after the accident.

Besides the families of the victims, the ceremony was attended by Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres; Dani Naveh, Minister for Liaison between Knesset and Government; Yuli Edelstein, Minister for Absorption; Yichiel Leket, Land Fund President; Chaim Chesler, Sokhnut's CFO; Knesset member Sofa Landver, and Mr. Michael Cherney.
